59th Meeting of the Society for Natural Philosophy

The 59th Meeting of the Society for Natural Philosophy will be held from Wednesday 11 to Friday 13 June 2025, in Heraklion on the island of Crete in Greece; the theme is "Nonlinear Elasticity and Analysis". The meeting will be held at the Foundation of Research and Technology (FORTH), hosted by the Institute for Applied and Computational Mathematics (IACM) (https://www.iacm.forth.gr/) and funded Jointly by SNP and IACM.

Nonlinear, large-deformation elasticity is re-emerging as a subject of central importance in various fields, including soft matter and biomaterials. Moreover, it plays a central role in the understanding of instabilities and singularities occurring in problems such as phase transitions, wrinkling, cavitation and fracture. Modern nonlinear elasticity and its connection to analysis and computation will be the central theme of the meeting. The goal is to bring together mathematicians, mechanicians, engineering scientists, and young researchers working in these areas.

Venue Information

Venue

The Workshop will take place at the "Lianis Auditorium" at the Main Building of the Research Center FORTH. FORTH is close to the University of Crete campus approximately 8km south-west of the city center.

Getting to Heraklion By Air

Nikos Kazantzakis airport (airport code: HER) can be reached by direct flights from many European cities. They are frequent flights daily from Athens (and other major Greek cities) of Aegean Airlines, SKYexpress and other airlines. Flight time to/from Athens is approximately 50min.

Getting to Heraklion By Sea

Luxury ferries sail from Piraeus (Athens) to Heraklion every evening. Departure from Piraeus is typically at 9pm with arrival to Heraklion at 7am in the next morning. For precise schedule and fares please check: Minoan Lines, ANEK lines and Bluestar ferries. We recommend that you book a bed in a cabin and enjoy a trip in the Archipelago drinking, dining, shopping etc in the ferry.

Airport to City center

From Heraklion airport you may either use public transportation (bus) or a taxi (stationed just outside the arrivals building). We recommend the taxi option.

Port to City center

The port is located 1.2km from the city center. You may either take a taxi or opt for a walk to your hotel.

Approximate taxi fares

City center to University: 13-15€
Airport to University: 20-25€
Airport to city center: 11-15€

Public transportation

There are two bus lines to the University campus. Ticket vending machines are located next to most bus stations. You can also buy tickets from kiosks around the city. A convenient bus stop is located outside Hotel Astoria at Eleftherias Square.
